The “I speak…” cards help court users identify their language and allow court staff to ensure interpretation needs are meet.

LANGUAGE ACCESS

LANGUAGE IDENTIFICATION RESOURCES EXPANDED

In early 2018, SBCSC launched a series of new language identification resources to enhance language access for the public. The “I speak…” cards are a language identification tool for court staff to show a court user when it is not clear what language they speak. The card itself contains 45 of California’s most commonly spoken languages. The “I speak...” cards allow staff to identify the interpretation need which ensures equitable access to the judicial system regardless of English language proficiency. Multilanguage interpreter signs are posted outside of courtrooms and inside clerk’s offices to notify the public of no cost interpreter services available.

Multilingual Continuance Forms offer the public their message in 26 languages communicating that their case has been continued. The form includes a spot for SBCSC staff to write an applicable date, time and courtroom location. This resource offers continued communication to our affected parties with limited English proficiency absent of an interpreter.
